Learn Southern Vietnamese, free

Việt Connect is a free app for learning Vietnamese the way it's spoken in Sài Gòn and the South. Choose the Southern accent once, and the words, example sentences and voices all switch to Southern Vietnamese. Then practice with real Vietnamese teachers.

In short: Southern Vietnamese uses different everyday words (heo not lợn, tui not tôi), usually five spoken tones instead of six, and a softer accent. Việt Connect has over 100 of these Southern word swaps built in, a tone trainer, Southern phrases and role-plays, and teachers you can book. It's free and runs in your browser on a phone or computer.

Why Southern Vietnamese is different

Different everyday words

Grammar is the same across Vietnam, but many daily words change. These pairs come straight from the Southern word list the app uses:

Five tones you'll hear

Vietnamese is written with six tone marks. Many Southern speakers say hỏi (?) and ngã (~) the same way, so mả and mã sound alike. You still learn both spellings; you just don't have to hear a difference that isn't there. The tones explained.

Pronouns and everyday replies

Southerners often say tui for “I” and tụi tui for “we”, and use soft endings like nha. Short reactions such as Vậy hả? (“Really?”) are part of everyday talk. More on pronouns.

How Việt Connect teaches the Southern accent

Pick Southern once, everything follows

Flashcards, example sentences, survival phrases and role-play scenes switch to Southern words, and they're read by Southern-accent voices.

A tone trainer

Say a word and see the shape of your voice drawn next to a native speaker's, so you can hear and see where your tone differs.

Real-life Southern phrases and role-plays

Ordering food, taking a taxi, shopping, haggling, a trip to the barber. Each scene follows your accent, so you learn tô phở, tiền thối and quẹo trái the way people say them in Sài Gòn.

Hear other regions when you want

An Other accents button on flashcards plays the same word from the North and Centre, so you can understand everyone without mixing the accent you're learning.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free app to learn Southern Vietnamese?

Yes. Việt Connect is free to use. When you choose the Southern accent, flashcards, example sentences, phrases and role-plays switch to Southern words (heo, chén, tui…) and are read by Southern-accent voices.

Does Southern Vietnamese have five or six tones?

It is written with the same six tone marks, but many Southern speakers pronounce hỏi and ngã the same way, so in practice you hear five tones. You still learn the spelling of both.

Is Southern Vietnamese harder than Northern?

Neither is harder. Most beginners find the accent they hear every day easiest, so learn Southern if your family, partner or city speaks it.

Will people in Hà Nội understand my Southern Vietnamese?

Yes. The accents are mutually understandable. You may hear different words for some things (lợn instead of heo, for example), and Việt Connect's Other accents button lets you hear them.

Can I switch accents later?

Yes. You can change between Northern, Central and Southern at any time, and the words and voices follow your choice.
